Remembrance Concert Amsterdam 24 March 2022
Remembrance Concert for Peter Sokole (1943-2021)
Amstelkerk, Amsterdam
24 March 2022 19:30
This concert was a celebration of Peter Sokole’s life-long love of music, his devotion and dedication to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and his passion to share these with a wider international audience through Musica Reale – chamber music performed by his colleagues in the orchestra.
Peter enjoyed 37 years of playing viola in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He was committed to and deeply concerned for the orchestra’s future. As a teenager he first got to know the orchestra from LP’s. In 1961, Peter heard the orchestra with Bernard Haitink live at Carnegie Hall. The playing style and tradition were a revelation and left a deep impression.
Peter wished to convey his warm thanks to all musicians who participated in Musica Reale over the years and to those who contributed in many different ways to make the Musica Reale concerts and educational activities possible. Peter’s programming was eclectic. Each concert included works of lesser known or forgotten composers, that were much appreciated by the audience.
Peter was actively preparing a future Musica Reale tour to Japan when the Covid-19 pandemic struck the world in 2020.
Peter’s final message to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was:
“eternal respect”.
